Check out Bryan Lee O'Malley's newest Graphic Novel, Seconds, just came out about a week ago and it is fantastic! I had no idea what the book was about prior to reading it and all I needed to know was it is a brand new story from Bryan. I read over 100 pages in one sitting and was drawn straight into the universe presented to me in the pages. The story is about a girl named Katie in her late 20's, who is a creative chef and runs a restaurant called, Seconds but is looking to start a new one across town in hopes of the perfect business. She deals with issues of the non relate-able younger generation becoming adults, problems with her X boyfriend showing up, and a mysterious house spirit. There's a fun fantasy element where the house spirit brings Katie a magic mushroom and if she eats it and writes down what she wishes she could've changed in the previous day just before bed, the problem magically goes away. Actually reminds me a lot of a Miyazaki film. But this is a good place to leave off before spoiling anymore of the story. So if you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim or just comic books about life, make sure to check out Seconds.
So many people I meet and probably many people you have met, always think that one needs to go to an expensive college to learn the magic of video production. Same with film, animation, photography, and so on. But in this modern age with cheap cameras, software, educational books, and the grandaddy of information, the internet. Why would anyone want to waste their time and money on school?
So first off, there is still an expense to be had with video production. But for a quarter of what one might spend on a semester of college, they could have a full set of gear and a library of education to use on their own productions. But first I'm going to break down the educational section of video. Why spend $70 plus on a bunch a books your teacher told you to buy at school for the class? Sites like Amazon have tons a books on video, cameras, editing, animation, special effects, and more for under $10 or $20 used. Whenever I want to learn more on a subject, I go and purchase a few books, spend maybe $30, and I'm greeted with a wealth of knowledge from the artists. Use the reviews on Amazon to help pick the right book for you and make sure to get a few from different authors to get a versatile take on the subject. Then just read the books from cover to cover and absorb all the information. Soon, you'll have a foundation on the subject. The Second, but really the biggest educational resource, is the internet. Sites like Vimeo, e-how, and Youtube provide tutorials and step by step guides, with pictures and video to make it clear and easy. Now with any internet information, some times you got to check out 2 or 3 sources to find exactly what one is looking for. But hey it's free and all you gotta do is type your question into the search engine. The 3rd great view into the film making world, is the DVD and Blu Ray special features. Some better than others but many different techniques can be acquired from the audio commentary tracks, behind the scenes footage, and some will even give you a how to guide on special effects, camera placements, and faking certain shots. Robert Rodriquez is especially good at this, with his 10 minute film school features on almost everyone of his flicks. So if a movie you like has special features, check them out and see what you can learn from it. Also look for the 2 to 4 plus disc versions of some films for even more educational wisdom. Well next your going to need some equipment. The basics being a camcorder, a microphone(not the one on the camera), computer, editing software, and a few work lights. Now there's a 1000 plus accessories and more that one can add to their arsenal but the basics should do just fine to start. Now this section could go on for a many pages, so I'll stop here and let the books explained all this in great detail before I guide you further. Just keep in mind that you don't always need the most expensive equipment or software out there. Just do your research and look at the reviews. The plan of action from here will be a circle of life, in the trial and error of movie making. Each video will be an educational process and through each one you'll learn what to do and what not to do for the next project. So here's the circle, 1. Watch! Observe movies and videos - Blockbusters, independent, television, commercials, short films, Youtube shorts, animation, and more. And don't forget about the special features. 2. Read! There's always another book to indulge in and an old book provides new thoughts when read again. Plus all the tutorials on the internet! 3. Create! Go out and make it. Write a script, shoot it, edit it, and learn from it. Now just keep repeating the cycle. This cycle can be used for every creative project, like comics, photography, animation, video game creation, writing, art, and more. Use it! Though there are many great books here are a few I recommend to get you started, 1. Rebel Without A Crew - Robert Rodriquez 2. The DV's Rebel Guide - Stu Maschwitz 3. Filmmaking For Dummies - Bryan Michael Stoller 4. The DC Comics Guide To Writing - Dennis O'Neil 5. The Animator's Survival Kit - Richard Williams

There's an amazing looking documentary movie out there called, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? and it is almost finished. The creator, Jon Schnepp is looking for a little more donations to put the finishing touches on the flick. Superman Lives was a script, that Kevin Smith wrote in the 90's but somehow, someway the film was never made. Kevin Smith will talk about it from time to time on one of his Smodcast podcasts. It was very faithful to the mythos of the comics and featured Braniac, Lex Luthor, and Doomsday as the villains. There's another site listed below that has a ton of information on that whole topic. But with this documentary, you could just sit down and watch the story unfold, with interviews from the creators involved, animated scenes created from the script, and so much more. So if anything, just stop on by and take a look at this amazing project and if you can, throw a little money their way and lets all watch this fantastic story unleashed.
http://superman.wikia.com/wiki/Superman_Lives http://www.fanbacked.com/c/death-superman-lives-what-happened-finishing-funds/ Garden State is an amazing movie that Zach Braff created and stared in with Natalie Portman in 2004. A romantic comedy about Zach leaving homing and returning years later when his mother has died. He reunites with old friends and finds love in a quirky, strange girl, Natalie Portman. But the comedy in the movie is just hilarious, with fantastic writing, and a great story based off Zach's life.
That movie was awesome and I've been waiting for his next flick to finally come out and here it is! Wikipedia explains it better, "Wish I Was Here' is the story of Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He winds up trying to home school his two children when his father can no longer afford to pay for private education and the only available public school is on its last legs. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn't find." Almost sounds like it's the same character from Garden State, just older with kids. But another semi autobiographical movie from Zach Braff looks great to me! And to top it off, he's producing and starring in another movie coming out the same day; a documentary on the history of video games, simply titled, Video Games The Movie. Sounds like another sweet movie to me and it's nice to see a full fledged, cinema released documentary on the whole life spectrum of video games. But the only sad thing to both of these films, is that they are both in limited release. So some travel may be involved. But hey, I'd make a whole day trip out of it to see these two films. Video Games The Movie - Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv2W0lbgVfY Wish I Was Here - Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCponfeWNOI I just discovered this sweet looking, Arnold Schwarzenegger tribute comic by David Hutchison!
